These rifles have been used during the twentieth century, as civil or military weapons. Some of these hundreds of thousand of copies have been built, and they still can be met in 2020, among civilians and in poor countries.Two types of of rifles can be distinguished, carbines (light rifles firing ammunition identical to handguns) and rifles (heavy military or hunting weapons).

| The modifications made by MAS 49/56 mainly concern the exterior design. The need for a more maneuverable weapon led the MAS engineers to considerably shorten the handguard, leaving an important part of the barrel exposed. |
