CORPORATIONS IN THE WORLD OF CYBERPUNK 2020

Here is a list of the corporations referred to in Cyberpunk 2020 reference books. The list focuses on American corporations. This is due to the fact that most of the scenarios for Cyberpunk 2020 are supposed to take place in the United States. There are of course other important corporations that you may need to include in your scenarios.

However, certain considerations have led me to set out certain rules regarding foreign corporations in the United States, which could explain their secondary role in the tribulations related to the adventures of your characters :

Background
If you want it protected, these are the people to speak to. They maintain the largest armed force of any corporation, although they do not maintain a particularily large amount of onhand military heavy weapons. These troops are mostly licensed out to other firms as corporate security guards, couriers and mercenaries. They are the best trained and hardest in the business and will follow their client's orders second only to Arasaka's. To the Arasaka corporation, they are loyal to the point of death. Arasaka is more interested in fostering its own political goals than protecting other companies and they use their position of trust with major corporations around the world to gain inside information, contacts and advantages that will help them to realize their ultimate goal of political and economic control of Japan.

Equipment and resources
Dispersed among Arasaka's offices are 250 AV-4 assault vehicles, 250 Osprey II aircraft, eleven corporate jets and twenty Boeing C-25 heavy cargo jets. Each office also has two helicopters and a surgical infirmary. Arasaka's wealth gives it access to almost all levels of military technology on fairly short notice. Arasaka has a secret training facility in Hokkaido, where it trains its security troops and operatives.

Background
Created in Amsterdam around 2014 by Dr. Rijk Leidsplein, backed by the financial acumen of Dieter von Manhoffen-Mass. Their plan was to follow the lead of BioTec & in inventing and producing chipware that affected actual body functions rather then the usual skill/knowledge transfer.
It was von Manhoffen-Mass that came up with the idea of making the main office merely a support center for a set of semi-autonomous regional groups. Most analysts believe that inside knowledge gained during his EC-government service guided him in creating this unusual corporate structure. The corporation was run as a partnership until 2019, when Leidsplein dropped out of sight on a trip to the U.K. At that time, von Manhoffen-Mass restructured the management and brought Dr. Christopher Mitchell on as chief of R&D.

Equipment and resources
There are three satellites owned covertly by BioMass through holding companies. These are used mainly for secure communications and corporation-only Net links. They are also used by the security department to keep an eye on the movements of specific employees, executives, and agents via transponder tags either wom on their work clothing or surgically implanted. These transponders are individualized for each person, and are only given to those who are in danger or need to be monitored.
The corporation also owns an orbital workstation, close to Crystal Palace. It is a large facility, fully-computerized, with a crew of twenty. The workstation produces "pure" blank chips for their more intricate designs.
Each continental head office (Berlin, Atlanta and Tokyo) is a small arcology. They have full hospitals, libraries, schools, training facilities, etc, as has the Mexico R&D base. The Berlin office also has an extensive med facillity that can do cyberware emplacement up to full-body replacements.

Background
When the fuel crisis really began to affect the industrialized community in the late 1990s, Biotechnica, then a small firm with only one office, came up with the answer : CHOOHZTM (pronounced "chew two"). CHOOHZTM (not its actual chemical formula) is a complex grain alcohol produced by genetically engineered yeasts and wheat strains created by Biotechnica. The potential of CHOOHZTM was realized almost immediately after it was introduced, and within a few years all fuel burning vehicles and power plants had converted to the new fuel. Although Biotechnica held worldwide patents, it lacked the production facilities to meet worldwide demand, forcing it to license production to several large agribusinesses and petro-corporations. These deals made Biotechnica an extremely wealthy, but still not particularly large, company. It is currently expanding and working on its next big biotechnical breakthrough.

Equipment and resources
Biotechnica has ten AV-4 assault vehicles, five corporate jets, three Osprey II aircraft and one Boeing C-25 heavy cargo jet, moved as needed among its offices. In addition, each office maintains two helicopters and a surgery capable infirmary. Due to the worldwide importance of its developments, Biotechnica has a fair amount of power in the political community and it can usually obtain whatever military equipment it needs, although some items may take more time to procure than others. Biotechnica has one orbital research workstation.

Daimler Benz has its roots in the first inventors of automobiles. Thus for long years, car manufacturing remained its sole business. After a while, though, they spread out into other branches of transporting. Today they produce everything from cars to missile systems. The various firms making up this megacorporation are all giants in their fields. Mercedes Benz still builds luxury cars, while MBB, Messerschmidt Bölkow Blohm, produces parts of weapons systems like rocket boosters or guidance systems. In addition DB also has its fingers in Airbus Industries, Fokker Airplanes and the production of Maglevs through AEG. This corp is moving.
To maximize efficiency, DB started a cooperation agreement with Mitsubishi in the early nineties. Though it took quite some time to bear fruit, DB and Mitsubishi have worked together succesfully in the past on several tank designs and space equipment.

In the late 1990's, EBM, already the largest computer and hightech manufacturer in the world, and one of the most significant corporations in existence, pulled off the greatest freemarket hostile takeover in history. Led by master corporate raider Dr. Kurt Muller, this maneuver caused the merger of EBM with many other prominent computer companies around the world, consolidating EBM's already fearsome market power. Currently, Muller and his two partners in the triumvirate, Ulf Grunwalder of Munich and Sir Nathaniel Poole of London, comprise the majority vote of EBM, holding 52.1% between the three of them. Their long-term goal is to consolidate as much of the world's high-tech manufacturing as possible under their label by any means.

Dispersed among the EBM offices as dictated by need are forty-six AV-4s, twenty Osprey II V-TOL attack craft, twenty corporate jets for the use of the executive board and five heavy cargo planes. In addition, each office has two helicopters and a fully staffed clinic and infirmary. EBM's power and stature gives it access to the highest levels of military technology. Background
The Eurobank is the most powerful financial institution in the world, the entire planet's finances are dependant on it. It controls the eurodollar that the value of every other currency in the world is based on and all international transactions use.
The eurodollar is so close to being the world-wide currency, the only thing preventing it happening is national pride in non-EC countries. There again the same problem slowed the acceptance of the eurodollar in the EC after it was founded. The world is getting smaller all the time, people regularly work in many countries these days and this is making salary paytments very tricky, an employee paid in US dollars may find things a little too expensive while working in Tokyo for example. As time goes on corporations, and even governments, will find that the only way to convince their employees they have a stable salary is to pay them in euro. Within the next twenty to thirty years national currencies should just fade out from use and be replaced by the euro, which will probably be renamed the worlddollar, terrabuck, or something equally neutral sometime soon.
The Eurobank reserves are stored in the mountains between Freilassing and Salzburg in the strongest vaults on the planet. The entrance is precisely on the old border between Germany and Austria. The reserves hold not only the traditional rare metals and metals, but also valuable patents, property deeds, and other items. It is also rumoured that the vaults contain blackmail information that the secretariat keeps on various groups and individuals.
For investors the bank offers Eurobonds. These are sold for values in multiples of a thousand eurodollars at fixed interest rates usually one percent over the current bank interest rate) with repayment at the end of a specified term, usually multiples of five years.

European Space Agency
HeadquarterEuropeReferenceDeep Space (page 8)
ActivitiesAerospace

Background

After its technological coup in 1998 with the Hermes II spaceplane, the European Space Agency looked fit to control most of the rapidly expanding sphere of colonized space. In the same year ESA began the recruitment of milions of people from the central African nations. In an event now known as the ESA Hireout, entire African townships were brought into orbit, trained and put to work. ESA took control of LEO for manufacturing and colonization, developing the more advanced Aries series space planes and constructing hundreds of workshacks and the magnificent Crystal Palace habitat (a glittering toroidal playground for the rich).

Since its founding, ESA has focused on orbital manufacturing and has obtained funding from several Euromultinationals who have traded both raw material and eurobucks for a slice of the orbital manufacturing industry. ESA also implemented a historic deal with the Soviets, who provided heavy lift capacity in return for spaceplane payloads. Orbital Air (the main carrier of personnel into space) was instgated by ESA and is stil the only licensed owner of the Aries series spaceplanes.

By 2015, ESA was the largest, richest and most capable spacefaring organization in existence. It creamied a 10% commission off all space-related manufacturing, and controlled most of the law enforcement in LEO and out to Luna through the EEC-controlled Interpol space police. They proceeded, to build several major orbital habitats, including three O'Neill colonies (huge rotating cylinders of lunar rock and metal framing several kilometers in diameter).

Unfortunately, as ESA grew and expanded, it became more bureaucratic and authoritarian. The main orbital population (approximately 68%) stemmed from the Hireout and was growing exponentially. These individuals, many born and bred in space, were hardy and individualistic and saw the orbital colonies as "home". This population, known as the "highriders", eventually revolted against the growing pressure from ESA to overcrowd the orbital colonies and force many workers to operate in sub-standard conditions for litle reward. This blewup into a series of short but violent clashes between Highriders and ESA known as the O'Neill Wars, during which ESA lost control of both O'Neill One and the newer Galileo Cylinder.

By 2025 ESA still controls the majority of facilites in LEO. It maintains both Crystal Palace and Paradise Station (an O'Neill cylinder at the L-4 point). ESA also has access to long range drive technology and with Soviet help has set up a Mars Base at Isidis Planitia. All ESA facilities are now kept under oppressive surveillance by Interpol and elite ESA corporate squads to ensure that the O'Neill Wars do not have any successors.

Fujiwara is one of the bigwigs in the financial world. This is a main bank, one of the characteristics of a Japanese corporate group. The dividends on Japanese stocks are low, so ordinary investors don't get them as property, except for some minor speculation: therefore, corporations do not get much working funds from stock sales, so they depend on bank loans for capital.
The bank controls other corporations through the use of loaned cash. it can then exert pressure on the company's board of directors to follow policies beneficial to the main bank, or can even take over through threat of foreclosure. Fujiwara has set up a keiretsu system, and controls corporations that aren't under the Fujiwara name via cash control. They use this power to build up the Fujiwara group, and you can tell a subordinate company by the superior attitude of visiting Fujiwara staff.

IEC is ranked as the number five corporation in overall terms; however, they have moved virtually all operations into off-Earth based facilities in preparation for an expected Orbital/Earth war which they fear could see the destruction of the more Earth-bound mega-corps. IEC has taken the lead in this move over both Arasaka and EBM, although these others are clearly pursuing the same shift with vigor. Currently IEC rates as the second largest orbital-based corporate and it has influences throughout the newly colonized worlds. Background

The Japanese Aerospace Bureau traded the ability to mass-produce cheap, efficient workshacks for access to space via ESA space planes. As a result, close to 85% of all workshacks and space stations are Japanese built. JAB has little high-mass or passenger-lift capacity, although Japanese technology helped construct the Kilamanjaro massdriver (the first massdriver was used on a Japanese railroad in the 1980's). The Japanese are also the main manufacturer of heavy colony construction equipment, including their "mobile construction suits", and invented the technology used to create "crete", a mixture of native soils and chemical brew used as a form of high-tech cementin construction of both Luna and Martian colonies.

The Japanese also lead the way in space new tech, diving headlong into the nanotech revolution. Most of the active asteroid mining equipment and life support suits used in the Belt are of Japanese manufacture, and some of the latest technology just appearing from the Japanese research labs into commercial production indicates they are far more technically advanced than many Western corporates had feared.

NASA's Chryse base sports a 58% Japanese presence and current construction of a vast network of living quarters under the existing base is totally regulated by JAB. JAB is also investing heavily in exploration of the Belt, and already has close to a dozen experimental laboratory/factories in operation.

Although they have the world's top tech in the making of orbital crystal and glassfiber, they don't make much profit. How can they then set up factories in orbit? The Corporate Group.
Big corporations in Japan often invest funds in small companies with original tech to place them in the exclusive keiretsu system. The Monoblade series, a synonym for Kendachi in some countries, was developed by Kendachi Tessho to demonstrate the uses for his crystal technology to gain funding for a low-profit company.
As a side-note, monoblades are not sold as weapons in Japan. They are only used in industrial equipment over here. Also, the president, Kendachi-san himself, is known for his business acumen, but also for his skill at kendo, and his short temper. He sometimes deals with troublemakers himself, with the aid of a crack solo troop. And yes, they are licensed to carry monokatanas in Japan.

Some of you may be reading this through the eyes of Kiroshi. Kiroshi is the general name of a small corporate group called, appropriately enough, "The Kiroshi Group" It is a cybernetics company, and is number one in the world in the making of optics. It is actually two companies : Kiroshi General Cybernetics and Kiroshi Optics, of which Optics gets the lion's share of the business.
In 2013 the group changed it's name from "Kiro-shiya" to "Kiroshi". It was originally a watch manufacturer in Kamisuwa, which expanded in the 1980's. It got its biggest boost by launching an orbital factory with the aid of JAB and Kenjin Technology. Soon, Kiroshi practically monopolized the optics business due to the quality of its orbital eyes and other products such as the opti-shield, the optical HUD (heads up display), the optical remote cyber-cam, and the anti-dazzle protection "Opti-Flash".
Kiroshi has very close ties with Kenjiri, and they have a joint design firm in orbit, to be closer to the manufacturing process.
Now, Kiroshi is aiming to dominate the Asian market. Hong Kong and Shanghai, where cheap Kiroshi imitations are made, are the company's prime targets.

Background
Microtech does one thing and they do it well : build full-size computers. They concentrate all of their efforts into improving their mainframe computer systems, without dabbling in cybernetic computers or mini-computers. Indeed, they take pride in the fact that their mainframes and workstations are used by other companies to design those types of systems. They are to the 2000's what Cray was to the 1980's and '90's, but on a larger scale. Microtech is the industry standard. Defense agencies around the world rely on Microtech mainframes and the Euro-Space Agency has several. With its hold on the specialized mainframe industry, Microtech is worried not so much about acquiring proprietary data through espionage as protecting itself against such theft. This is where most of its covert and military resources go, as well as a sizable amount of its own computerpower. Microtech must be vigilant for external threat as well, however, as there are several larger corporations who would like to acquire Microtech, or see it eliminated in order to further the success of their own products. Accordingly, Microtech is attempting to beef up both its financial and military security.

Equipment and resources
Six AV-4 assault vehicles, ten helicopters, two Osprey IIs and three corporate jets are dispersed among the offices. Microtech has access to sophisticated miltary hardware on a fairly small scale, with good amounts of personal weaponry and armor, including man-portable heavy weapons. It has no heavy, mobile armored vehicles (such as tanks) and only limited access to other vehicularly based heavy weapons. With sufficient time, however, Microtech can usually acquire whatever equipment it needs.Only the Dallas office has a surgery-capable medical center, but all of the other offices have well staffed infirmaries capable of dealing with most non intensive care needs, including trauma and illness. Microtech has no orbital platform of its own, but it occasionally ships experiments up by Hermes space-plane if zero gravity is required.

Network News 54 is a wavelength monopolizer, operating on the same frequency across the country. Accordingly, no matter where you go in the country, Network News 54 is on Channel 54. Despite its name, News 54 offers many diversions in addition to news. Every regional office offers a slightly different schedule to its district, with syndicated series, non prime-time movies, independent local news programs. Certain elements of the broadcasting are universal nationwide, such as prime-time series and bihourly national and world news shows.

Equipment and resources
Network News 54 owns 42 AV-4s, ostensibly used as mobile news gathering and broadcasting facilities. These vehicles also retain much of their combat function. News 54 also owns 30 helicopters for weather and traffic reporting at each of the network offices, as well as for shuttling company executives and ten corporate jets and five Osprey II aircraft. The network has standard personal equipment for its troops, but little access to military weapons of a non man-portable nature, with the exception of a few vehicles. OTEC is an extremely large multinational megacorporation that has been in existence for over 35 years. They began as a group of at-sea oil drilling companies that were bought out by billionaire Damon Russell with the intent that at-sea colonization would start with the ownership of the ocean's vast energy resources.
As early as 1993 Russell began aquaculture and mariculture on an immense scale and introduced processed krill to the diet of millions worldwide. His attempts at genetically engineering sea plant and animal life resulted in the creation of new foods and other organic products for consumption. Their greatest creation is the floating synthetic plastic known as Crypropalan. Made from the remains of genetically engineered microfauna, it is what many of the floating cities rest on. Strong, incredibly bouyant, light and derived from a renewable natural source, it was a breakthrough in construction science.

In 1996 Russell's scientists perfected their tidal energy converters and thermal varience converters and began beaming energy to the power-hungry masses in major cities of the world. Damon Russell was killed in an extraction attempt in 2006 by OTEC's largest rival, Unified Ocean Sciences, a hostile takeover attempt by Sean Lowell, head of UOS. Amanda Russell, Damon's wife has run the company since his death and has expanded OTEC's earnings by thirty percent in seven years.

Since then OTEC has been the undisputed leader in ocean technological advances and continues to rule the seas. They have been under media assault in recent years because of the fact that they have attempted to nationalize their floating islands and stations. This would give them more claim to the surrounding resources than they already have.
The corporation has, however, been a large source of food, plastics, petroleum products, liquid hydrogen production, stress science technology (which gets used in space exploration as well as underwater colonization), genetic engineering, and motion energy sciences. Space exploration and colonization is their next field of endeavor and they are currently seeking an energy source with greater energy return per pound than fusion.

Equipment and resources
Dispersed among the floating cities are : over 100 small ocean transports, 30 large ocean transports, 30 AV-4s, 30 submersible Vehicles-2 (Transport), 15 submersible air vehicles (at sea/air combat), 5 SEV-1 (Surface Effect Vehicles, top secret stealth attack craft), 30 attack helicopters, 10 transport helicopters, and other non-military transport vehicles.
130 shoreline oil rigs, 13 tidal flux converter stations, 12 thermal variance stations, 3 underwater metal extraction stations, 4 deep sea oil rigs, 8 genetic engineering laboratories, 2 nuclear reactors, 1 fusion reactor, 2 orbital stations in Low Earth Orbit, 1 solar/microwave converter beaming station, 1 satellite stations in LaGrange orbit.

Background
Orbital Air holds a key position in the twenty-first century; with their large fleet of French-made Hermes spaceplanes they monopolize all orbital lifting capability, with the exception of a few governments, none of which offers comparable service. Many corporations rely on Orbital Air for transport of cargo out of the gravity well. The Euro-Space Agency's Crystal Palace L-5 colony, a massive orbital hotel complex for the ultra-rich, would be out of business without them. With all commercial space bound cargo dependent upon them, Orbital Air is in a lucrative position that it would like very much to maintain. A large part of OA's budget and covert resources is put to use ensuring that they remain the leader in orbital technology and that the competion does not make it off the ground, literally or figuratively. Currently, their eye is on China, which is improving its commercial lift capability rapidly. Also, Euro-flight Corporation is expanding its operations and expecting to bring orbital services on line soon. This has OA worried about its monopoly. The Johnson Orbital Facility is a transfer station for passengers bound for the Crystal Palace, where they switch from the space-planes to space transport shuttles assembled at the OA orbital workstations, or purchased from the Euro-Space Agency.

Equipment and resources
35 orbit capable Hermes Scramjet space-planes, 35 corporate jets, two helicopters per office, 70 AV-4 urban assault vehicles, 15 Boeing C-25 heavy cargo jets and 30 Osprey II V-TOL aircraft. All major offices have surgery capable infirmaries. Orbital Air is well equiped and has access to almost all levels of military equipment. It is primarily interested in space defense and air-superiority weaponry to protect its orbital and airborne resources. In addition to the Johnson Facility, Orbital Air maintains two small maintenance and research workstations, and has a small fleet of orbital vehicles to transport crews between the facilities.

Background
Peak & Derrera is one of those rare corporate oddities in the business world of 2020 : they were small enough to duck the fallout from the crash of '94, but strong enough to keep their heads above water. In 1970, George Peak and Salvatore Derrera were a couple of grunts stuck in the middle of the Cambodia invasion. During quiet periods, the pair would talk about what they would do if they made it back to the world. There was nothing else to do but talk, and it was better than listening to the crickets chirp. Both men had heard the news : the situation at home was starting to sour. They shared the same philosophy that the smart investor would tum to technology as America's industrial base weakened.
Peak and Derrera both survived the war and kept in contact with each other when they returned to the US. In early 1972, "Sally" Derrera called Peak with a business offer : if both men could scrape up $25,000 to start with, it was possible for them to break into the precious industrial diamond market. Peak was skeptical but after some research decided to invest. Thus in January 1973 an idea that began as a way to soothe the combat jitters flourished into a financial reality. The partnership of Peak & Derrera was born.
The company expanded into Asia at first, treading delicately into the new Chinese and Japanese markets that were opening up. When the computer age began in 1979, the company cornered a nice chunk of the silicon market. With customers like Atari and IBM, the firm's fortune was assured. Peak & Derrera was incorporated in 1980.
With the boom of the 1980s, the company grew quickly, breaking into various industrial and precious metal markets. When the party ended in '94, most of the Asian developments were sold off for vital cash. Later, that cash was used to invest in the critical European market.
In 2002, George Peak sold his interests in the company and became an independent investor. The Wasting Plague incapacitated Sal Derrera in 2003, and he sold his share to Penstone Equities. Orvis became chairman of the board, but the firm's original name was retained for its prestige.

Petrochem Industries keeps the world running, literally. They are the world's largest producer of CHOOH2 and control millions of acres of arable land across the United States. This land is used to grow the genetically altered wheat that is used to make CHOOH2 (surplus grain is shipped across the world as food). Petrochem is also one of the largest remaining oil producers. With the oil supply dwindling, all remaining fossil fuels are used to make plastics and other synthetics. Petrochem has more fertile oilfields than any other company. All of these assets are huge and accordingly hard to protect from other companies that would like to usurp Petrochem's wealth. As a result, Petrochem invests huge amounts of money in protecting itself, maintaining an armed force worthy of a small country. Currently, all of the major petrochemical corporations are in a research race to come up with a viable artificial plastic base to entirely replace petroleum products. Consequently, industrial espionage is rife in the industry.

Equipment and resources
Petrochem has vast interests to protect and is thus fiercely armed. Dispersed among their major offices, oil fields and agricultural areas are 150 AV-4s, forty Osprey II aircraft, ten Boeing C-25 heavy cargo jets and fifteen corporate jets. Each office has three helicopters and a surgery capable infirmary. Petrochem has considerable access to the highest levels of military technology, due to their national and worldwide importance. Background
The first years of the 21st century brought about the collapse of America. It was during this time that many of the 20th century's corporate superpowers fell; GE, Beatrice and Columbia Entertainment were just a few of the casualties. However, amid the attendant chaos of the Wasting Plague, the Food Crash, the 2nd Central American Conflict and the First and Second Corporate Wars, a brilliant scientist by the name of Dr. Corvus Crowe rose to fame and fortune. Having completed his doctorate at nineteen, he spent his early twenties working under Janice Grubb as a software engineer for Kenjiri Technologies when they were developing the first Net interface algorithms. He left the project before it was finished (for unknown reasons) and went on to become one of the founders of BioDyne Systems, the corporation credited with creating the first viable cyberlimbs. As one of the few members of the "BioDyne Seven" who had a head for business, Dr. Crowe bought out several fragmented post-Collapse corporate holdings. In 2009, while BioDyne Systems was going bankrupt, Raven Microcybernetics was declared an official corporate entity. Later that year, BioDyne became another property of the investment group formed by Dr. Crowe, whose new corporation embarked on a meteoric rise to American industry's top twenty.

Revolution Genetics Inc. is an expanding genetic engineering firm which deals in a multitude of applications involving genetic manipulation and biotechnology. Having its history in political revolution, Revolution takes its name from its origins and the term "re-evolution", or the genetic restructuring of nature. Revolution Genetics is very open about its developments, and shares them with other businesses and countries. It is confident of its superiority in the field. The company carries over 65% of current existing patents on genetic enhancements and biotechnology. Its origin has allowed it to evolve a less bureaucratic work structure, creating a beneficial environment in which to work and do research and development. Though unorthodox by established standards, It has allowed Revolution Genetics to excel where others have floundered. Helix is its public face : an outlet much like the Chrome cybernetics stores, though dealing in biotech and minor genetic tailoring like skin coloring and pheromone production.

Equipment and resources
All of Revolution Genetics Inc.'s regional offices have the facilities to research and develop genetic alterations, biotech, and biological compounds and agents. All regional offices have operating rooms, genetics labs, and a full staff to man them. The major developments are always done, however, at the central research facility on Antarctica, which has the most advanced genetics labs in the world. Products are developed at the central facility and then transported to the regional offices where they are processed, manufactured, implanted, and distributed. All regional offices have one AV-4 assault vehicle. Six corporate jets and five Osprey IIs are split among the offices worldwide. All offices have a large security force with weapons purchased from Arasaka. Also all offices will have a small number of genetically-enhanced combat personnel direct from the central facility on Antarctica. Revolution plans to purchase an orbital facility within three years. Its Data Fortresses are considered Level 3 systems.

SegAtari has three different faces. The most famous one is the world's biggest game maker. Even if you haven't played Mindgames™ such as "Hackman II" and Rush™'s "Virtual Villains", you've seen their ads.
Face number two is the maker of the world's best humanoid robots and the controlling software. You've probably seen the "moving mannequins" in the show windows of boutiques or the "moving dolls" in amusement parks. They started as the tech for "amusement" robots. Some other companies may sell more durable or mobile robots, but nobody comes close for the sheer beauty and human grace of the SegAtari 'bots.
The third face is weapons manufacture. A Virtual Reality Interface (VRI) is necessary for the use of ACPA, and was originally made for the "Mekton Warrior" game, using small, handmade robots. SegAtari, the VRI developer, still has an 80% share of the field. This division started in 2015, and is now the world's 5th largest military electronics corporation. This face of SegAtari isn't so well known because there are no complete weapon systems made by the company. They just make parts, such as interfaces and weapon links. Many soldiers on the battlefield kill each other using the same circuitry that you have in your home VR game.

Background

With the slow disintegration of the United Soviet Block under Gorbachev and the subsequent revolts during the Yeltsin-to-Gorborev transition era, the Soviet Rocket Corps was rapidly demobilized from military to civilian status. In a brilliant move, the SRC refitted nearly 40% of its MIRV missile fleet to heavy payload carriers, leasing them to ESA and other nations. With the best heavy lifting vehicles and the largest body of data on long-term, man-in-space projects, the Soviets were able to trade themselves into the current space frontier boom. They sold advertising on spacesuits, set up construction projects, and eventually established Kosmosov, the heavy lifting vehicle combine.

Trading for ESA technical information, the SRC also built up a moderate military presence with orbital stations, spy and laser sats, battle sats and ground laser arrays. The huge laser complex at Sary Shagan has since been entirely converted to laser-lift vehicle support, but can be reconverted within 72 hours.

Still working closely with ESA, the Soviets maintain a strong and active presence in space. They are clear leaders in terms of raw lift power out of the Earth well and have been enormously successful in construction of long-term life-support systems. The Soviets are also the recognized experts in space psychology. There is a minimal Soviet presence within the Chryse base on Mars; however, rumours abound that the Soviets are planning their own unmanned missions to Mercury and Venus to set up mining facilities.

In 1997, the soviets had the capability to recover only a fraction of their oil reserves; the largest in the world. After a massive program of expansion and modernization, Kerosov, the soviet state oil industry, was strong enough to break away from the union government's central committee. By 2002, it had become the Soviet World Oil Industries: SovOil. SovOil's leaders know, however, that the oil won't flow forever, and are making plans to carry the corp into the 2050's, when oil is no longer a prime source of income. In the new Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, SovOil is a major economic force, and its expansion into other industries is not unnoticed by Petrochem. Much ill-feeling remains, even 10 years after the war; with competition heating up, and resources growing scarcer, the two giants may be headed for another confrontation.

Sungan is the largest Zaibatsu among the pre-Second Korean War corporations. They supported General I even before he came to power, and helped him gain victory. After President I's death, Sungan was expected to fall from grace in the inevitable sweeping out of the old regime's favorites, along with the cabinet and congress. Korean business and politics are extremely close, and most of the cabinet are business leaders.
However, Sungan survived. Sungan's connections with many foreign businesses in Europe, America and Japan (who need a door into the Korean market) kept it afloat financially, and provided moral and PR support. Also, Sun UnSuk, the charismatic head of the corporation, wields considerable personal power. She is the only female business leader in Korea, and is under considerable criticism from many segments of society for not letting a man run the show. She also draws a lot of respect from the other half of the society, for the same reasons.
Sungan's business techniques are quite radical, and the advertisements are often shocking, and critical of Korean society. The conservatives blame her for corrupting the masses. This particularly endears this company's products to the growing Cyberpunk movement in Korea (students, women, former expatriates) who are their main customers.

Tanson's hostile takeovers and belligerency towards "Noje companies" are a cause of great worry in Korean economic circles.
Chon Chung II is convinced that Korea is being corrupted by foreign influences, and the prime accomplice is Sungan Industries. He is building up to the day when he can declare an economic jihad on Sungan and Sun UnSuk. He also fanatically hates Arasaka Saburo. The mere mention of the name is enough to provoke a room-smashing fury from the Korean business leader. Rumor has it that the Chon family were former servants on the Arasaka estates in Korea during the occupation. Neither side will confirm or deny.

Background
Formed by three friends on the bones of a Japanese airgun company, Tsunami was born in the Net, and this has flavored its feel to this day : Tsunami is a very eclectic, loosely organized corporation. Tsunami utilizes the latest in computer-assisted design and manufacturing equipment, and has maintained a reputation of being more than a little ahead of the cutting edge of technology, a rep that has many mystified, as they would appear to lack the resources and manpower to rival giants like Militech in terms of research and development. Rumors abound of a rogue AI (stolen from either the Pentagon or Arasaka), but Tsunami flatly denies such claims and there has been absolutely no proof brought to light on this topic. For many years, Tsunami was a top secret organization, working strictly behind the scenes, providing designs to governments and a few select corporations, but in the last three years they have expanded their services into the public market. Response has been excellent, and Tsunami's economic growth has been almost frightening.

Equipment and resources
Tsunami has well kept medical facilities in each of their offices. They maintain a fleet of eighteen AV craft (mostly AV-4s, but at least 2 AV-6s and an AV-8 are kept for testing purposes), six helicopters, and six corporate jets. Although their security and covert operatives are extremely well armed with conventional and heavy weapons (much of it not available on the market...), they have immediate access to little in the way of military grade vehicles or artillery (although they own at least six PA suits, all custom). They can, of course, call on the impressive assets of Militech and Lazarus when necessary.
Tsunami maintains at least three top secret testing and construction facilities, one somewhere in Japan, one in the Rockies, and a third in an as yet unknown location (most rumors point to a crater outside Tycho base, but as Tsunami is not known to possess any space transports, this is hardly credible). Tsunami is rumored to have a powerful "rogue" AI, possibly named Muramasa, at their command, as well as several lesser computer systems, all very well defended.

The Orbital "government", such as it is. The Orbital Soviet has control over Orbital military forces and the power to requisition funds and/or support for defense of the Orbitals' power. Each Orbital company has a seat on the Orbital Congress, though its president, Anatoly Korsunsky, has near-unlimited power in those areas encompassed by his mandate. A huge majority of the Congress would be required to unseat him or to undo one of his decisions. The Orbital Soviet also controls the Orbital Bank.

Background
When Microtech's board decided in the early 2010's to target computer technology, a small team of forward-thinking and frustrated scientists packed their briefcasesand slipped out a back door to form their own company. Within five years they had perfected molecular scale techniques and began floating initial prototypes onto the market, mostly small scale healing drugs, skinweave, etc.
Once the base technology was perfected it brought an asymptotic rise in the development of further enhanced products. By 2025 all major corporations are investing in the development of nanotech construction, drugs, computers and in fact anything else. With this astonishing rise in new technology has begun the rise of UC, now the largest orbital manufacturer and corporate shining star. UC's technological capability currently far outstrips any other corporation and some frightening rumours abound about their latest innovations.
UC has begun building facilities throughout the solar system. Corporate insiders suggest that the recent destruction of USAF's flagship Andromeda, billed as the most powerful gunship in existence, may have been instigated by UC. Suggestions that UC has begun construction of its own deep space-capable craft have been met with ridicule by UC executives.

Equipment and resources
Utopian Corporation has fourteen armed deltas, three private spaceplanes, twenty five OTV's and four battle sats. Its security forces are always armed with the latest and most powerful weapons available. The corporate policy of distributing key personnel and facilities over a wide area makes them difficult to harm.

WNS keeps tabs on the world, by any means possible. Newspapers and news stations around the world pay large amounts of money to receive WNS stories via the WorldSat Network. WNS has more offices than most corporations, but most of these offices are fairly small and limited in function, intended to serve only as bases of operations for the operatives and reporters working in an area. WNS has at least a small office in almost every major city in the world, but these are sometimes no more than rooms with a few provisions, one resident agent and a Telecom-Terminal linked to the nearest regional office. Few competitors can match WNS' information gathering capabilities, and WNS ensures that it remains at the forefront, not only through legitimate means, but also through spying, espionage, sabotage and illegal snooping of all sorts. WNS does not run any stations of its own, choosing instead to broker its information to the highest bidder. There is no shortage of buyers, as ratings-hungry broadcasters will fork over millions for exclusive rights to an especially juicy story and the included multi-media presentation package containing WNS' videos, write-ups and commentaries.

Equipment and resources
Dispersed among the regional offices as needed are 65 AV-4 urban assault vehicles, twenty five Osprey II aircraft, twenty-five corporate jets and five Boeing C-25 heavy cargo aircraft. Each regional office has two helicopters and an infirmary. Only the London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Tokyo and Seoul offices have surgical capability. WNS has access to moderate levels of military technology, including personal armor and weapons, light vehicles and aircraft.

Background
WorldSat has the monopoly on large-scale satellite communications and is responsible for the transmission of phone, military, computer and commercial data. These communications are crucial worldwide and their disruption could be disastrous. WorldSat invests a great deal in making sure this does not happen. The satellites are even shielded against electro-magnetic pulse, although no one is really sure how well this will work. Although it is illegal, it is also possible for WorldSat to monitor any of the communications it is transmitting.

Equipment and resources
Dispersed as needed among the offices are thirty AV-4 assault vehicles, twelve Osprey II aircraft, five corporate jets and three Boeing C-25 heavy cargo jets. Each office also has two helicopters and a surgical infirmary. WorldSat's satellites are crucial to many nation's communications. Consequently, most high-tech military hardware is available to them on short notice. WorldSat has a large, well protected orbital service facility.

Background
Petrochem has a variety of subsidiaries devoted to a number of specialized chemical research and manufacturing applications. Xoma Corporation is the most important of these subsidiaries. Xoma (pronounced "zoma") is responsible for the development and manufacture of Petrochem's extensive line of pharmaceutical products. Xoma is a world leader in the development of new drugs. They have created vaccinations and treatments for ailments as wide as AIDS, schizophrenia, cyberpsychosis, and athlete's foot. The subsidiary attracts many of the best and the brightest of the physical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology fields. Xoma's labs are highly proprietary, and commandeer some of Petrochem's toughest security. They are currently branching into genetic drugs and custom bacteria and viral development programs in a cooperative venture with Petrochem's ally, Biotechnica.
There have been allegations that Petrochem, via Xoma Corp, is connected with several incidents of designer drug proliferation and designer plague outbreak, but none of these cases has ever been brought to trial, much less proved. Petrochem's legal department has been effective in deflecting all claims, and even turning popular sentiment through the publicizing of the corporation's contributions to medical research.

Background
Zetatech is a typical up-and-coming high-tech company doing its best to grow and diversify. It has carved itself a small niche in the industry through the traditional methods : quality products, industrial espionage and strategically applied violence. Having made it over the first hurdle, Zetatech is attempting to build a heavy name for itself by expanding overseas, the assured way toward success and a high inflow of stable Eurodollars. This means encroaching on markets occupied by other companies, most of which are not inclined to share their profits. Zetatech's position as an established, growing, but small and relatively weak company make it a prime target for hostile takeover and they must be continually on guard.

Equipment and resources
Three AV-4 assault vehicles, three helicopters, one private jet based out of San Francisco International Airport. Each office has an emergency first aid infirmary, but only the San Francisco office hasa surgery capable trauma center. The military hardware available to Zetatech is only of moderate power. High-tech personal arms, armor and vehicular weapons systems are readily available, but only limited amounts of heavier weapons are available, and usually they can not be obtained on short notice. Zetatech has no airlift capability of its own, but could arrange access to heavy lifting aircraft given enough time.
