CONTEMPORARY SHOTGUNS

Derived from hunting weapons, shotguns don't fire a single projectile,but a swarm of smaller projectiles. The barrel isn't rifled, because the projectile swarm can't use the stabilizing effect of projectile rotation.
The pump or slide action is used to feed in a new cartridge, but it needs two hands for use, so semi-automatic systems are also used. Shotgun have many advantages. Their large size and big bore give them a significant psychological effet, and the spreading of the shots (particularly with short barrels) makes them "area weapons", making targeting easier. Their main drawbacks are size and weight, low ammo capacity, short range and poor armor penetration. The last two can somehow be offset by using specialty rounds, but they are often of dubious legality and generally have no spreading.
Common variations are shorter barrel and pistol grip (sometimes with a folding stock) for concealment and use in enclosed spaces, like a car. But they make the weapond difficult to contol, particularly with the larger bore size.

This is a newer South African shotgun, similar to the Striker. It uses a revolving drum and a folding metal stock. Construction is of corrosion-resistant aluminum alloys. Cleaning may be infrequent unless non-lethal rounds are used.

The M3 Super 90 is a version of the Benelli M1 modified to use either pump action or semiautomatic as the press of a button. The M3 is used by military and police roles, especially SRT teams and antiterrorist units.

The M4 is a dual-action semiautomatic design, but can be switched over to a pump-action weapon as needed for special munitions. It uses a gas-operated firing system, improving its reliability. Recoil is low and the weapon performs excelently under field conditions.

Originally a joint design between Daewoo and the American company of Atchisson, the USAS-12 was classified as a Class III destructive device in the US and Atchisson dropped out of the partnership, feeling there would be little or no US sales. The original design was the Daewoo/Atchisson AA-12 Assault Shotgun, a selective fire shotgun designed to fire standard as well as exotic ammunition. This was later modified by Daewoo in the hopes of US sales and renamed the USAS-12, but the large ammunition capacity of the magazines dashed hopes of this too. Both weapons can be fed by large capacity box or drum magazines. The weapon is designed like an assault rifle, and bears a superficial resemblance to the M-16. The low rate of fire helps keep recoil low, especially during automatic fire.

Based on the SPAS-12, the PA3-215 is a tiny weapon similar in thought to the Ithaca Stakeout. The pump-action grip on the 215 has a pistol grip on it. The stock can be totally removed for maximum concealment.

The SPAS 12 is one of the first dual-action shotguns, facilitating its use as either a semi-automatic or pump action design as needed. Both fixed and folding stocks are available.

With the choice either standard pump or semiauto fire that is fast becoming standard to all Franchi shotguns, this is Scott Harada's fullsized shotgun of choice. Resembling an AR-15 and complete with folding stock, this shotgun is definately an intimidator and serves very well in an urban environment.

The HK 512 features a gas-operated semi-automatic design. The weapon is covered in a non-reflective black finish. A special shot converter is available for the muzzle, ensuring the shot spreads evenly in a rectangular pattern, this would limit its use as a slug gun.

An American-made pump shotgun, it is available with folding stocks, Magna-Porting to reduce muzzle climb, pistol grips, sight mounts, and stockless versions, as desired. It's probably the shotgun with the widest amount of options available without having to make a special order.

A not so successful attempt to make the Mossberg 500 into a more effective combat weapon. While allowing the shotgun to retain a full length barrel while being as short as legally possible it has trouble with the extended action and trigger mechanism.

The 590 is the tactical follow-up to the Mossburg 500 sporting line. It includes a new 9 round magazine and can be fitted with a heat shield to protect the user from a hot barrel. It features a speed loader, a hollow space in the stock holding four slugs for rapid reloading.

The chinese M98 is very similar to the american Remington 870. It features a composite stock and grips and a matte black finish. The M98 can be equipped with either ghost ring sights or a conventional bead-type foresight. Also modifiable is the existance of a pistol grip and stock, both of which are modular.

A unique shotgun design that was years ahead of its time. Developed in the late 80's the Mark 3-A2 has a ten round ammo cassette which acts as both magazine and firing chamber. It accepts any standard 12 ga. load and when fully or partially loaded the ammo cassette can be mated with a special detonator base (an extra 50 eb) and plunger to become a lethal and reusable anti-personnel mine (AP mine damage is the damage of the ammunition used x the number of live rounds in the cassette... use maximum damage if device is stepped on or otherwise point blank).

This is the Remington 11-87 (a development of the 1100) modified for military use, used in those times when a pump-action weapon simply does throw out lead fast enough for your purposes. It differs from the standard 1100 in having rifle-type sights, better chrome inside the barrel, extended magazine, and a recoil pad on the butt that is almost a full inch thick.

This was originally a USMC development of the Remington 870 that was designed in the mid-1960s, and saw long service with that organization until officially replaced by the Mossberg M590 in the early 1990s. However, large numbers of these shotguns were still in service at the time of the Twilight War, both with all branches of the regular US Military and reserve forces (particularly with the Army National Guard).

This weapon is designed for use by Russian KGB and police forces. It is an unusual weapon, with the tubular magazine above the barrel, and the slide action being raked forward to eject a spent round and back to chamber a new round. When the slide is moved, the entire barrel moves as well. The weapon loads from the top and ejects from the bottom. This weapon has also been sold on the civilian market.

Shotguns are always popular weapons, and sawing off the barrel for a greater spread at close range is nothing new. This weapon takes it to the extreme. Most shotguns are shaved to the choke, this shotgun has actually had the choke shortened, dropping its ammo capacity to 2, but also enabling faster reloads and more concealability, and to further the conceivability factor, the stock has also been removed.

In the terms of stopping power and short range firepower in general the 12 gauge shotguns are hard to beat, but most shotguns of conventional design are too long or has too small magazines for confined spaces operations, so designers of the Techno Arms developed a new concept of the shotgun, mixing the concept of the compact submachine gun and the concept of the pump shotgun.

This is a South African shotgun featuring twin tubular over-barrel magazines. A switch selects which magazine is feeding the weapon on a given shot; therefore, the user may have two types of ammunition ready at a time. The pump action is revered, in that the slide is pushed forwards to eject a spent round and back to feed a new round. Ejection of spent rounds is downwards. The surface of the weapon is shrouded in plastic to prevent catching on clothing and equipment during use.
